Bankers vs Cleaners

The results of a recent study by the New Economics Foundation, a UK think tank, suggest that a cleaner is worth much more to society than a banker. A hospital cleaner can create £10 of value for every £1 they are paid, while bankers destroy £7 of value for every £1 they earn. Tax accountants do even greater damage.

Eilis Lawlor, spokeswoman for the New Economics Foundation, said: "Pay levels often don't reflect the true value that is being created. As a society, we need a pay structure which rewards those jobs that create most societal benefit rather than those that generate profits at the expense of society and the environment".

Sitting on a Volcano

Twenty-five years ago, the worst non-nuclear industrial accident ever happened in the city of Bhopal:

Thousands of people died in the days that followed, and many more have suffered from the long term effects of exposure to methyl isocyanate and the abandoned chemical wastes which have polluted the water supply over the last twenty five years.

People in the US often think that this kind of tragedy cannot occur in the most industrialized nations. The Love Canal disaster was an eye-opener for many Americans, and contributed greatly to the reasons for the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund scheme, which was designed to clean up other dangerous waste dumps across the country, as they were discovered. Read all about Superfund here

Want to know which sites are near you? Take a look at the EPA site here, but bear in mind, the sites on the National Priorities List are just those deemed large enough and dangerous enough to warrant clean up action by the EPA. There are many smaller yet extremely hazardous sites across the US, and many of those have probably been forgotten long ago....

Happy Thanksgiving

If you think about it, Thanksgiving can be a lot like global politics. People pretend to like eachother in front of relatives, while looking for opportunities to make some passive aggressive comments and figuring out how far they can push their hosts. This doesnt apply to everyone, but I'm sure there is at least one in each gathering!

It seems that our old friend Blackwater (or Xe, as they like to be known as now), is at work for Uncle Sam again. VIP protection must have become boring, so now Blackwater is performing special ops missions alongside the CIA and the Special Ops Command. Those operations now include missions in Pakistan.

"The source, who has worked on covert US military programs for years, including in Afghanistan and Pakistan, has direct knowledge of Blackwater's involvement. The source said that the program is so "compartmentalized" that senior figures within the Obama administration and the US military chain of command may not be aware of its existence."

At the very least, they are conducting snatch missions and intelligence gathering (in a country we are not at war with). However, there have been persistent rumors of "false flag" operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and even Iran - acts of terrorism conducted by groups loyal to, or at least paid by, the US Govt.

Democracy to Despotism

After watching and reading about stories of a certain ex-governor of Alaska and her supporters, I remembered a couple of vintage films which I'd like to show to you. In them, the ideas of respect, tolerance and equality are discussed, as is journalistic integrity! These are from the early post-war period, but it is never too late to get these ideals back.

Be Seeing You

The final installment of “The Prisoner” was shown on AMC last night, and after a wait of several years for this ‘re-interpretation’ of a classic, I’m sure it was a disappointment to many. Firstly, it was a huge undertaking (imagine trying to produce a re-make of The Godfather). Even with that in mind, the storyline was cliched in places and missed many opportunities.
No.2 carried the show, and I think Ian McKellen would have made a fine No.2 in the original show. No.2 delivered some great lines concerning apathy, and the true nature of humanity. He also commented that those who do not or cannot control their desires are easily controlled by their masters. Whether their masters are ‘the state’ or corporations (or whether they are now indistinguishable) was not specified.
No. 6 was a mere shadow of the real No.6 from the original. This was no quick witted, scheming, strong willed individual – just another pawn.
Was AMC’s The Prisoner a reflection on modern times? Is a dream-like, shallow experience which is crammed with advertisements (the irony!), and leaves you wondering what it was all for, a representation of the lives we lead? The original Prisoner was filmed in a time of political turmoil. Student revolts were occuring across Europe and in the US (which would soon escalate to the formation of the Red Brigades and state opression such as the Kent State Massacre), and the tense Cold War struggle continued. Even No. 6 did not know which side was running the village.
It seems to be that AMC consciously steered away from damning commentary on our corporations and politicians, and in doing so missed the point of The Prisoner.

Six of One..

...and half a dozen of the other. I've already read one article online comparing the AMC Prisoner and the 1967 classic, and by the time I've fished writing this, the 2009 version of The Prisoner will be on our screens. There have been rumours of a 'remake' of the original for several years (sometimes a movie, sometimes a series) and while it can't hope to be better than the original (haven't seen it? AMC allows you to watch the whole series here), the new version has a bigger budget and, I admit, better visual effects. Hopefully, on top of being enjoyable TV escapism, we'll have a reminder of the struggles of the individual (and society) against the state, and the corporations, which might even provoke a meaningful discussion or two.

Fans will find some great prisoner-related shirts here, and for true fans, here's a reminder of the real number six:

Darkness

Today, I have an interesting documentary titled The History of The Devil for you. It explores how our beliefs have changed (or not?) over the centuries, and what we've done in the fight against evil.

George Carlin seems like the obvious choice to follow that, so of course I had to switch to Dave Allen with a childhood perspective:

Have we been manipulated and scared into belief in a god? Has religion been hijacked by politicians, or has it always been intertwined with politics?

Social Psychology and You

Here is a very interesting film on the basics of social psychology - how groups and leaders can affect, control and manipulate followers (you). It includes the famous Stanford Prison Experiment:

That video ties in quite well with The Shock Doctrine, a short film which explores very similar themese with an emphasis on control.

Finally, I'd like to add a longer documentary which I think will have more of an impact after watching the first two videos in today's blog. Entitled "New American Century" (yes, referring to the PNAC), it attempts to cover the events of the last few years and various points in US history, and is at times reminiscent of other great documentaries such as Iraq for Sale and Why We Fight, and even some of Adam Curtis' work.

Happy Halloween

Do you want to hear a scary story?
Once upon a time, there was a problem with a product made by Baxter and Bayer. Lots of people died of AIDS because of that problem, according to this (you may remember this from my old blog):

It doesn't end there. In fact, that is the introduction. Baxter has done very well with the vaccine for swine flu - in terms of profit. I'm nopt sure I can say the same for their procedures. Here's a whole page of Baxter 'oddities':

Baxter vaccine oddities

Here is where it starts to get really odd. Earlier this year, Joseph Moshe claimed "to be a microbiologist who wanted to supply evidence to a States Attorney regarding tainted H1N1 Swine flu vaccines being produced by Baxter BioPharma Solutions. He said that Baxter’s Ukrainian lab was in fact producing a bioweapon disguised as a vaccine. He claimed that the vaccine contained an adjuvant (additive) designed to weaken the immune system, and replicated RNA from the virus responsible for the 1918 pandemic Spanish flu, causing global sickness and mass death."
He was sent home to Israel. Here's his story:

Joseph Moshe's story

This week, people in the Ukraine are dying from a mystery illness in rapidly climbing numbers:

Ukrainian outbreak

Don't worry, I'm sure it's just a series of coincidences. That would explain why we aren't hearing about it all on TV.

The Public Option

So far, I've stayed away from engaging in the healthcare debate on this blog. I don't plan on changing that today, but I think these films are worth watching. Britain's National Health Service was born in 1948. Britain was broke after World War Two. Rationing did not fully end until the early 1950's. The nation had to be rebuilt, but the available funds were minimal. Nevertheless, the NHS came into being. In addition, other benefits were introduced, and the contruction of New Towns began - towns which were designed to be better, healthier places to live (with the pedestrian in mind).

Huxley vs Orwell

Amusing Ourselves to Death cartoon

This is a very good comparison of the two authors, and I think each viewpoint is equally important. My conclusion would be slightly different, in that I think Orwell imagined that we would resist to the bitter end, and Huxley thought we would fall like a house of cards. In a way, Orwell was the more optimistic of the two.

Nothing To See Here...

Yesterday, I noticed a strange story about a company known as American Police Force. This security company appeared on the streets of a small town called Hardin, which has no police force and a big empty jail. See the story here.

Today, I see that someone has done their homework and figured out that APF is a front company for... Blackwater/XE. They are tasked with filling the 464-bed jail (and explaining the "City of Hardin Police" insignias on their vehicles?). Of course, you can expect to hear a lot more about this on primetime news tonight, along with the news (or here) of several OKC cameras "going blank at basically the same time on the morning of April 19, 1995".

A Love Story

A certain Mr Moore has made a new documentary film - Capitalism: A Love Story. Let's take a quick look at it:

Remember - his documentaries always have an element of entertainment in them, rather than the pure investigative journalism style of Greg Palast or John Pilger, but he always makes valid points.
Has capitalism itself changed over the years?
This article suggests that it might have done so. Take a look at this thought provoking 1948 film on the benefits of capitalism:

Creation

I wonder, can you tell from the title? Once in a while I find myself surprised - genuinely surprised - at the actions and opinions held in this country. Just when I think I've seen it all...

A British film about Charles Darwin has failed to find a US distributor because his theory of evolution is too controversial for American audiences, according to its producer.

I expected some people to not like it, but to fail to find a distributor?! I think some people need to grow a thicker skin. Is this really how things are in this country now?

"It is unbelievable to us that this is still a really hot potato in America. There's still a great belief that He made the world in six days. It's quite difficult for we in the UK to imagine religion in America. We live in a country which is no longer so religious. But in the US, outside of New York and LA, religion rules."

I just can't believe it.

In other, more amusing news ...

Creationism question in 'misleading' science GCSE

"Earlier, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, insisted it had no place in school science."

More Inconvenient Truths

Sometimes the truth is obvious, yet most of us refuse to acknowledge it's existence. The last taboo - population control - appeared in the news again today:
"Contraception is almost five times cheaper as a means of preventing climate change than conventional green technologies, according to research by the London School of Economics."
You can read the full article here.
"Every £4 spent on family planning over the next four decades would reduce global CO2 emissions by more than a ton, whereas a minimum of £19 would have to be spent on low-carbon technologies to achieve the same result, the research says."
I'm not suggesting we should focus less on other efforts, but the best and most obvious method of tackling our planet's problems is to reduce the quantities of resources that we use. Less people, less comsumption and less waste.

Another fitting article appeared today:
"The collapse in Britain's bee population is being made worse by pesticides that are banned in much of EU, according to a new study."
You can read the full article here.
Apparently much of the EU has already reached the same conclusion, hence the bans. Of course, the chemical manufacturers will be able to tell you why this is not true, or where the data is flawed or inconclusive, but they always have a product to sell and investors to please.

War...

...is a calculated and condoned slaughter of human beings.
Those are the words of Harry Patch, a WW1 veteran who was buried today at the age of 111.

Here's a video of Harry from a couple of years ago:

If you read my blog I don't need to tell you what to think about war and peace, so I'm going to end with a composition which is often performed during Remembrance Sunday which I've always found quite poignant.

H1N1 - The Sequel

Let's start with an introductory video from Fox News(!):

This page lists DoD preparations. "If a flu pandemic were severe enough to qualify as a catastrophic incident, the DoD response could be anticipatory in nature." This includes quarantines, tracking patients, evacuations and other restrictions. It looks like NorthCom was set up just in time - how convenient is that?!

Should you be more concerned about martial law and the Posse Comitatus Act, or untested vaccines which are already making drug companies billions of dollars?
Here's an edition of 60 minutes, reporting on the 1976 vaccine scandal:

Fair and Balanced

Did you know that Israel is holding the passengers and crew of a humanitarian aid ship bound for Gaza? I guess celebrity funerals are more important these days. Those being detained include former United States Representative, Cynthia McKinney, and an Irish peace activist and Nobel laureate, Mairead Corrigan Maguire. You might think that warranted a little more attention on the news. Imagine if Iran attempted the same thing. Do you think the US would stand by and watch?!
Journalist:What’s being done about that? Are they on their way home? Will they be deported? What’s the next step there, and will their supplies ever get to where they’re going?
Spokesman: On that last question, I don’t know the answer, actually. I think I have to refer you to the Government of Israel. We can confirm that the Israeli navy did arrest those on board this – the ship which is known as Spirit. We can't comment on any of the individuals or the number of individual American citizens on board because of Privacy Act concern.

Poisoned Waters

Make some time and enjoy this PBS documentary on the state of our rivers and oceans. Its appalling that we still haven't learned. The reports of 20, 30 and even 40 years ago have not caused us to change our ways - at least not enough to protect our water and the species which rely on it (including us).

Murder - Corporate Style

The town of Libby, Montana is synonymous with environmental disaster. It didnt grab the headlines like Love Canal did back in the 70's, but it shares the problems of lethal waste and helpless residents. Libby was located next to a vermiculite mine. The vermiculite was heavily contaminated with asbestos. Dust was everywhere. People are dying.
From Wikipedia:
"In February 2005 the Federal Government began a criminal conspiracy prosecution of Grace and of five Grace executives. The government alleges that Grace conspired to hide from employees and the town residents the asbestos dangers and that it knowingly released asbestos into the environment.
In May of 2009 W.R. Grace & Co., along with all of its executives, was found not guilty in connection with asbestos contamination of Libby, Montana, ending what was called the biggest environmental-crime prosecution in U.S. history.
On June 17, 2009 the EPA declared its first public health emergency. This emergency covers Libby and nearby Troy. It will provide an additional 130 million dollars in cleanup and medical assistance."

At least this is the only place where this kind of disaster happened, right?
Wrong.

Bitter Harvest

The title for this post was shamelessly taken from the title of a 1981 movie I saw on Hulu this weekend, but it seemed to fit quite well.

Day 0

Finally, I make the switch to a 'real' blog! I've been thinking about an opening post for a while but I'm going to have to save those for another time. I'll at least go with something current for you.
Getting The Truth Out - The Liberty
Here's an excellent documentary which details the events of that day:

I've spent way too many hours on here designing unique shirts for the masses, and now I'm branching out to here (this one is very much under construction).

I'd like to end this initial post with a great little story for you - The Story of Stuff...
